The POP Pulse is a monitoring service the Brandle Presence Manager performs as part of its basic Inventory service. POP Pulse is comprised of the following monitoring features:
- Reachability - is the POP reachable by the public?
- Last Activity - when was the last activity on this POP?
- Audience - how big is the audience base for this POP?
- Accessibility (OAuth) - does Brandle have enough access for complete monitoring?
Each feature of POP Pulse is described below.
Reachability (Reachable?)
If you have a point-of-presence, you generally want your public to find it. However, sometimes POPs go AWOL (e.g. the site goes down, someone un-publishes the site, or the POP gets moved or renamed). When this happens, you will want to know about it as it could be unintentional or if is intentional, other people and systems may need to be updated.
Reachability is reflected in the Inventory table under the column called Reachable? In that column you will see one of the following values:
- Unmonitored - monitoring is not supported on this POP.
- Pending - Brandle is waiting to test reachability with the next monitoring run.
- Unreachable - the site server is taking too long to reply to the request or Brandle can reach your server, but your server won't allow Brandle to retrieve the POP.
- Not Found - Brandle can contact the server, but the server can't find the POP.
- Inaccessible - Brandle contacted the server, but the server replied that access to your POP is restricted.
- Yes - the POP is reachable and readable without any issues.
Reachability monitoring is currently supported on the following platforms: Facebook, Flickr, Google+, Instagram, Slideshare, Tumblr, Twitter, Vimeo, YouTube and WWW POPs. POPs placed in the Other tab, by defining the Other POP Types, are generally monitored for reachability but there may be exceptions.
Last Activity
Social media is meant to be social, which means people should be posting content at a rate that is appropriate for that platform. Last Activity is a way to see when the last time someone posted content to that site. Depending on platform, this is either just the content posted by the POP or in some cases it may included comments and posts by others.
Last Activity is reflected in the Inventory table under the column called Activity. In that column you will see a value expressed in number of days/weeks/months/years since that last action.
Last Activity monitoring is currently supported on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube.
Audience
Another important metric for a POP is the size of the audience it is capable of reaching. If a POP does not have a very large (or growing) audience, then perhaps a review is warranted. Conversely, if this is a Concerning, Suspicious or Infringing POP then a large audience count is indicative of the relative importance of addressing this issue sooner than later.
Audience Size is reflected in the Inventory table under the column Audience. In that column you will see an integer number reflecting the number of friends/fans/followers who are potentially "listening" to that POP.
Audience size monitoring is currently supported for Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube.
Accessibility (OAuth)
Some monitoring can be accomplished without special access to a POP; however every social media platform is different. For example, Brandle cannot get the Audience size of a Tumblr account with the owner giving the Brandle Presence Manager OAuth access. Also, in some cases OAuth is a good indication that you still have control of the POP and/or someone has or has not changed the password - the latter varies by platform.
OAuth may also affect the level to which Profile Change Detection may be monitored.
Accessibility is reflected in the Inventory table under the column OAuth. In that column you will see one of the following values:
- N/A - OAuth access is not available for this platform.
- No - OAuth access is available but has not been established.
- Yes - OAuth access has been established and is in good working order.
- Lost - OAuth access was established but has since been lost.
You can currently OAuth the following platforms: Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, LinkedIn (company pages only), Flickr, Tumblr and Vimeo.
